Balkan biodiversity across spatial and temporal scales -

patterns and mechanisms driving vascular plant diversity

The genus Stipa is taxonomically complex due to the lack of stable morphological characteristics that delimit the species, and complicated infrageneric classification. Particularly complex are the species of the Stipa dasyphylla group, to which S. ucrainica - considered to be restricted to the Pontic floristic region - belongs. The recent discovery of this species in Northern Macedonia points to the current state of knowledge about this rare and endangered species. The main objective of this study is to determine the distribution of the populations from the southernmost limits of their range based on extensive field research and revision of herbarium material and morphological variability using traditional morphometry.
